Long Stay policies are great for people who are going abroad for an extended period of time. From those having a GAP year before or after University, through clients who are working abroad, to those who have retired and decided to travel the world, Voyager Plus Long Stay Travel Insurance caters for all of them.

Because each trip that requires a Long Stay Travel Insurance policy is different, if something doesn’t quite fit your client’s needs, we are always happy to refer their requirements to Underwriters, if you call us on 01483 562 662.

What is a Long Stay Travel Insurance Policy?

Quite simply, a Long Stay Travel Insurance policy is one that covers one trip that lasts for a long duration, for example 12 months.

It is important to note at this point how Long Stay differs from an Annual Multi-Trip policy, just so your clients don’t inadvertently end up with the with the wrong policy.

Sometimes an Annual Multi-trip is referred to as Annual Travel Insurance. An Annual Multi-Trip policy is designed to cover multiple short duration trips e.g. 1 or 2 weeks, rather than a continuous trip of several months, as a Long Stay policy does.

Something also to note is that Long Stay policies are usually charged on the total number of months (or part thereof) basis, rather than a period of days as Short Stay, Single Trip policy are.

What is the Maximum Age that Voyager Plus can cover on a Long Stay basis?

The good news is that we have recently increased the Maximum Age of the insured to 69 years old on Voyager Plus Long Stay polices.

Perfect for those who are looking to make the most of their retirement with extended trips away.

What is the maximum duration that can be covered by a Long Stay policy?

The maximum duration that Voyager Plus Long Stay Travel Insurance can quoted for depends on the age of the Insured.

Age Band Maximum Duration
0-50 Years Old 18 Months
51-60 Years Old 12 months
61-64 Years Old 9 Months
65-69 Years Old 6 Months

For those aged 0 - 50 Years old it is possible to extend this up to 24 months (2 years) on referral. Similarly, for those aged 51 - 60 years old it is possible to extend to 18 months away, on referral.

My Client has decided to they want to stay abroad longer than planned, can their policy be extended?

Policies can be extended up to the normal maximum period for their age bracket. For example: if your client is in their 30s and originally they bought a Long Stay Travel Insurance for 15 months and they want to extend it to 18 months, that is no problem.

However, if you had someone who was in 67 and had been away for 5 months and wanted to add another couple of months to a total of 7 months, generally they wouldn’t be able to extend it past the maximum duration of 6 months.

In these situations, we may be able to refer trips to underwriters, but this would be done on a case-by-case basis.

Can my client travel through more than one country on a Long Stay Policy?

Generally, this is not a problem, if people are going through a number of countries all within the same area of cover, although your client is advised to check the latest FCDO advice while they are away, just to make sure the country they are travelling to has not been advised against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’, while they have been abroad

When quoting a client for the policy, it should be for the area your client is going to spend the most amount of time in (i.e. more than 50%). So, if they are going backpacking in Australia for 12 months and spending a week in the USA on their way out or way back, then you would quote the area that covers Australia (Area 3: Worldwide Excluding USA).

Conversely, if they were spending 6 months in Australia and then 7 Months in the USA, you would need to quote the area of cover that covers the USA (Area 4: Worldwide).

Can Voyager Plus Long Stay Travel Insurance be used for clients studying abroad?

Studying abroad is not a problem. However, if your client is going abroad on a sports scholarship we may need to refer to underwriters, depending on the sport.

Course fees are covered as standard by the policy.

What Activities are Covered under a Voyager Plus Long Stay Policy?

All activities covered under the Leisure Activities in the policy wording are covered as standard on a Long Stay policy. Winter Sports activities can be added, however this is only for a maximum of 31 consecutive days (days cannot be split), and this will need to be added to by us to the policy by calling 01483 562 662.

Other activities in the Action or Action Plus list may be possible to cover on a case-by-case basis upon referral.

Can my client work while abroad?

For those who are going abroad for an extended period of time, work is often something that they need to do in order to make the most of their budget.

Anything of a managerial/supervisory, sales or administrative basis is covered. Similarly, bar work, restaurant or catering work or working as a musician or singer is also covered.

It is also possible to do Fruit Picking (not using heavy machinery), light agricultural work, supervised conservation work and charity work.

Supervised animal sanctuary work can be covered, but we cannot provide cover in relation to any interaction to dangerous wild animals such as big cats.

Personal liability is not covered while working and this is because the employer should provide this, while your client is working.

Personal Accident is excluded from Fruit Picking, light agricultural work, supervised conservation work, charity work and supervised animal sanctuary work.

What if my client needs to return home for a family event?

If your client needs to return home for example for Christmas or a family event, the Voyager Plus Long Stay policy allows the insured to return to their home country for short visits of up to 2 weeks. Please note that during this trip home, cover is suspended.

Can Medical Conditions be covered on a long stay policy?

Yes, if your clients have medical conditions they can be screened in the normal way, when going through the quote.

Please note though that if your client has already departed on their trip then we cannot screen pre-existing medical conditions.

My client forgot to get travel insurance before they left, can they buy it on an Already Departed basis?

Even if your client has already travelled, it is possible to buy Voyager Plus Long Stay travel insurance on an already departed basis, although it does come with the usual caveats around medical conditions not being able to be screened.
